Lisbon exhibition, 8th of July, mark your calenders.

I've a coming up exhibition in Lisbon at the Paula Cabral Art Gallery. There will be a painter from South Africa, Adrienne Silva and another painter, Jirina Nebesarova from the Czech Republic.
This was the opportunity I was waiting for to start a series about the road leading to Atar (or anywhere else in this desert country that only has four tarmac roads, the one to Atar, North East, the one to Rosso and to the frontier od Senegal that runs South, the "route de l'espoir" the longest with more than 1200 Km towards the East and the Malian border and the most recent the road that was finished in 2005 and that runs from the Northern frontier (Western Sahara) to the South and like all of them has its converging point in Nouakchott the capital - another tarmac road is being built that runs along the river Senegal)
Mobile antennes just like the roads are opening the country to the rest of the world and vice versa.
They both allow for more mobility and communication making people less vulnerable.
In a country as big as Mauritania with a very small population just over 3 million, news about events would arrive always with delay, days, weeks, months? Always making people feel detached of what was happening in the rest of the country. The same for news from relatives or friends living in another area.

For me the most amazing thing about the desert is its immensity and how it makes us conscious of our utter insignificance.
This series show the desert seen from the tarmac road that links Nouakchott to Atar, 409 Km.
The point of view never changes and the places are always deserted of people.
The sizes are small 20 X 20 cm and 30 X 20 cm worked as diptychs. (since I've been living here the size of my work has adjusted to my means of transporting them, Big if they can be rolled , small if not)
I want to have music playing on head phones during the exhibition and while looking for Mauritanian music in the net I came across this great blog about Sahel and desert musique where you can even download it and got in touch with Chris that hopefully will help me in choosing local musique that best will convey the greatness of this country that can seem so empty and repetitive to those who cross it in a hurry.

Ready, Set, Sketch!
When?
July 21-23 of 2011 in Lisbon, Portugal.
What?
This three-day event consists of lectures, exhibits and field sketching workshops around Lisbon's city center taught by local and international professional illustrators, architects, designers, artists and art educators (seeSchedule and Instructors and Speakers). The Symposium is organized by the volunteer-based nonprofit Urban Sketchers, whose mission is to foster the art of on-location drawing.
Where?
The Symposium is held at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL) in the heart of Lisbon's Chiado neighborhood.
How can I sign up?

Lisbon
Meeting lots of great people in Lisbon thanks to my friend Ana Pissarra that manages to put me up to date in a week on what's going on in contemporary Art. On the left hand side, Rachel Korman, one of the founders of "CarpeDiem, arte e pesquisa" (Art and Research) is an experimental platform within the scope of contemporary art. The building they're in is an old Pombal Palace, just amazing.
Julia in the hand right side is an Italian architect that also sketches, Lisbon is inspiring her and the Lara and Filipa are also visual artists. Great dinner, the painting in the back is by Tiago Mestre.
I walked a lot in Lisbon and being build over 7 hills you're always climbing or descending a steep hill. Its been one of the hotest summer in years and being close to the river was good. There are museums and Art centers and the famous "pasteis de Belém" a cream cake you'll die for.
João Fiadeiro was doing a workshop on real time composition at RE-AL and as I walked in he was already discussing the work with the a bunch of people from different nationalities and coming from different backgrounds (dancers, architects, visual artists). I did a lot more sketches that I will post in the next few days.
The electricity museum where we went to see an exhibition entitled "The People", " O Povo" in Portuguese, on the right hand side the outside of Gulbenkian museum where we went to see the work of Ana Vidigal an exhibition I enjoyed a lot, conceptual art without loosing its aesthetics, good for the mind and the senses.
I've posted this drawings with no respect of its cronological order but I managed to draw one of the "quiosques" of Lisbon where you will only find vintage drinks and good coffee.
To finish, Leonor, a young 12 year old that was half asleep after lunch (close to the river) on a hot summer day, the colorful lines, she uses to make bracelets and hair plaits for her friends.

Sketchcrawl in Lisbon
Lisbon is a beautiful city still full of old neighbourhoods with plenty of things to catch your eye , plenty of dogs poos , as well, but then its not a perfect world. 
Started sketching in the morning on my own and managed this two sketches around S. Bento before joining my two girlfriends for lunch.
I had made a call for sketchcrawling in Lisbon and the meeting place was Praça de Camões at 3pm. We were nine people in all.we were joined by three urbansketchers
Richard Camara http://richardcamara.blogspot.com who was visiting ( he is portuguese but lives inSpain).
There were two girls and a young man but they didn't show up later at the meeting point, so I don't know who they were.
Some of the square seats were occupied by sketchers, others by people reading or resting, sun was up and the air chilly. ( freezing for my standarts!)

Ana had just come to take some photos and see who would show up and ended up buying a sketchbook in an art shop and having plenty of fun , borrowing everybody's pen's and watercolors.
Went to this gallery where a friend of Ana works and we all ended up sketching the show. I chose to draw an image of a screaming child while Monica chose to draw a face on the ritus of orgasm drawn in a bed sheet.
This was the last sketch of the day before meeting up to check our drawings and to have the extreme pleasure of having someone else's sketchbook in our hands.
