Solo sketchcrawl

Didn't do a lot yesterday on sketchcrawl day. Found about it late and didn't do a call and it was hot and sticky. So this was my late afternoon and you can find the morning one here or just check the forum of sketchcrawl to see all the cities in the world that were out there sketching yesterday.

Sketchcrawl in Nouakchott's fishing harbour

Saturday, june 20th, we met at the fishing harbour around 4pm temperatures were high and the color you see in the photos is due to the sand storm. But by the sea side there was a cool breeze and we were happy we were sketching here.
The building you can see was built by the chinese, they're the ones that have given the city its most important and necessary buildings like hospitals, the Olympique stadium, the Palais de Congress, the President's residence and many more. We have to say that they also bring thin quality plastic bags that burst the moment you put an item into them so that the city is covered in those plastic bags.

Those were the late arrivals, they belong to the "maison des artistes", Amal, a moroccan artist living here and Mokhis an Mauritanian artist. I hope to post all sketches in the next days.

Omar Ball one of the favourite and youngest artist in Mauritania.

One of the youngest participants but not the only one. He felt a bit intimidated by the attention but then started to cope with it. Next time we'll bring extra paper and pens for any one that will want to join us.

Sketchcrawl in Lisbon

Lisbon is a beautiful city still full of old neighbourhoods with plenty of things to catch your eye , plenty of dogs poos , as well, but then its not a perfect world.
Started sketching in the morning on my own and managed this two sketches around S. Bento before joining my two girlfriends for lunch.

I had made a call for sketchcrawling in Lisbon and the meeting place was Praça de Camões at 3pm. We were nine people in all.
we were joined by three urbansketchers
Richard Camara http://richardcamara.blogspot.com who was visiting ( he is portuguese but lives inSpain).
There were two girls and a young man but they didn't show up later at the meeting point, so I don't know who they were.

Some of the square seats were occupied by sketchers, others by people reading or resting, sun was up and the air chilly. ( freezing for my standarts!)

Richard Camara sketching and a church door in Praça Camões.

Ana had just come to take some photos and see who would show up and ended up buying a sketchbook in an art shop and having plenty of fun , borrowing everybody's pen's and watercolors.

Went to this gallery where a friend of Ana works and we all ended up sketching the show. I chose to draw an image of a screaming child while Monica chose to draw a face on the ritus of orgasm drawn in a bed sheet.

This was the last sketch of the day before meeting up to check our drawings and to have the extreme pleasure of having someone else's sketchbook in our hands.

Ana, Monica and I decided to end the day with a nice dinner and a play. We went to see William Shakespear but it was so dull that Monica and I spent the whole play ... SKETCHING!

what's sketchcrawl ?

I didn't think about explaining what's a "sketchcrawl", Someone called Enrico Casarosa started it in S.Francisco. He started going out for a whole day sketching, anything and everything, breakfast leftovers, cats, the neighbours house, to streets, museums, whatever. Then he started doing it with some fellow artists and then the thought came to make it worldwide. So once every 3/4 months in a specific days people organise themselves in the forums of sketchcrawl and they get together to draw in one day.

And Mauritania started it this Saturday just five of us but we hope to be more next time.

This is me sketching my friends.

Sidi Yahya on the left and Bechir.

Mouna.

Mehdi, 11 years old.

And the four of them hard at work, all of us Mauritanian style, that means sitting down with the chairs Sidi provided from his "children's art school".

sketchcrawl in Mauritania

I started the morning with this sketch and maybe because I wasn't wearing my glasses I drew the cats tails so long. I never noticed til Hermann told me and then I could see it, those two are Sahelien cats with long necks and ears that remind me of the egypcian godess cats.

After breakfast I drew my neighbours "barraque", Moula'id a big woman of uncertain age lives here with her family and occasional visitors. I come often for a tea or just to chat.

Then around the corner there 's a place under a big tree where you'll always find taxis but the drivers (owners?) are from Guine-Conakry, so the place is called "Guinean taxis" place.

This is BMD street and there is tarmac in the middle but no paved streets, they're extremely rare in Nouakchott , so is tarmac but the new president that took the power by force in the summer has promised 400km of tarmac to be done in NKC and the works have started. You can see the minarets from the Saudian Mosque in the background.

Went for lunch in Auberge Sahara where hermann works its a sort of camping/bread and breakfast used by travellers on their way to Senegal and Mali, another quick sketch and of to meet other crawlers.

There were four of them Bechir and Sidi Yahya, both painters. Mouna a student from Sidi Yahya and little Mehdi the son of a friend of mine.

Its the first time they go out to draw and they don't draw from observation often or at all, so they felt shy and we didn't go to far taking with us the small stools from Sidi's school. In this sketch you can see Mehdi sitting close to a pile of rubble where small goats are playing.

Two young painters joined us at 6pm, Ami and Aicha but they didn't quite understand what it was about so they didn't bring anything to draw an we hope they'll join us in the next sketchcrawl.
My last drawing with a huge moon coming up in the sky, great day and nice to be with others drawing.

Those are some of the drawings done by my friends.

Sidi Yahya

Bechir Malum
Mouna

and Mehdi, 11years old.
